George Martinez - Capstone Project
Building Library Research SkillsThe Building Library Research Skills capstone project focuses on first-year college students learning basic research skills utilizing library resources. First-year year college students are often required to incorporate scholarly sources into their academic assignments. To help students learn how to find scholarly sources, instructors will schedule a single library instruction session with a librarian. During these library instruction sessions, librarians struggle to include all of the important concepts that can benefit students during their academic careers.
The capstone project includes implementing an asynchronous tutorial that covers the following core concepts: how to brainstorm keywords for research, identifying elements of a peer-reviewed article, and searching the library database Academic Search Complete. During the live instruction session, students build on the skills reviewed in the asynchronous tutorial and learn how to evaluate a source for reliability. An assessment is given before the asynchronous tutorial and after the live instruction session to determine whether the instruction solution is meeting the project’s goals. |
